Notes
The
purpose
of this
thesis
is
to
examine
the
presence
of the
Moorish
in
Miguel
de
Cervantes
'
novel
, The
Adventures
of
Don
Quixote
de
La
Mancha
. The
Moorish
population
was an
Arab
minority
in
Spain
,
converted
to
Christianity
after
the
Reconquest
of
Granada
in
1492
and
expelled
from this
country
in
1609-1614
. The
novel
presents
the
feats
of the
errant
knight
on
two
levels
. The
first
level
is
the
reality
of
Don
Quixote's
existence
; the
second
is
the
idealistic
world
Don
Quixote
created
,
based
on the
knowledge
he
acquired
through
reading
the
literary
bestsellers
of that
time
.
During
the
sixteenth
century
, the
Moorish
people
lived
under
constant
pressure
from
Spanish
authorities
because
they were
considered
to be '
enemies
of the
state
' for
political
and
religious
reasons
.
First
, this
population
of
Arab
descendants
was
perceived
as a '
fifth
column
'
during
tensions
between
Spain
and the
Ottoman
Empire
.
Secondly
,
even
though
the
Moors
were
Christians
, they
secretly
practiced
Muslim
religious
rites
not
tolerated
by the
Catholic
authorities
.
Finally
,
Spanish
society
involved
in this
problem
on a
daily
basis
and
influenced
by
ecclesiastical
propaganda
,
demonstrated
hostile
attitudes
towards
this
minority
.
Writing
Don
Quixote
,
especially
episodes
related
to the
Moors
'
status
in
Spain
,
Cervantes
associated
real
historical
data
with
fiction
.
Two
important
and
significant
events
mark
this
novel
;
one
of them
is
Cervantes
'
five
year
captivity
in
Alger
. The
result
of his
experience
inside
the
Arab
world
was The
Captive
Tale
; the
interpolated
'
First
Part
'
story
in the
novel
published
in
1605
even
though
critics
agree
that the
story
was
originally
written
around
1585
. The
second
incident
is
the
expulsion
of the
Moorish
population
from
Spain
in
1609-1614
. This
historical
fact
was
used
by
Cervantes
as
background
for the
Ricote
family
story
depicted
in
Don
Quixote's
'
Second
Part
'
published
in
1615
. In
my
research
(in
both
parts
of the
novel)
,
I
have
observed
an
alteration
in the
author's
point
of
view
regarding
this
marginal
group
.
Since
the '
First
Part
' of
Don
Quixote
was
written
after
Cervantes
'
personal
experience
in the
Arab
world
,
I
assume
, in
my
thesis
, that this
unpleasant
occurrence
negatively
influenced
his
attitude
toward
the
Moorish
population
in
Spain
.
Therefore
, his
opinion
during
that
time
was
close
to the
official
judgment
.
Even
though
the '
Second
Part
' was
written
ten
years
after
the '
First
Part
', the
period
between
the
creation
of The
Captive's
Tale
and
Ricote's
story
is
longer
than
two
decades
.
Cervantes
, as a
member
of
Spanish
society
and a
great
observer
, was
familiar
with
peoples
'
attitudes
toward
the
Moorish
population
over
a
period
of
twenty-four
years
.
Consequently
, the
1609
expulsion
, as
well
as
Cervantes
'
awareness
of the
complexity
of the
Moorish
situation
in
Spain
,
changed
his
attitude
towards
them
notably
. In
my
thesis
, by
comparing
these
two
stories
and
relating
them to
historical
events
and
facts
from
Cervantes
'
life
,
I
seek
to
demonstrate
the
author's
negative
opinion
of the
Moorish
expulsion
; an
opinion
derived
from his
belief
that
Moorish
integration
(if
not
assimilation)
with
Spanish
society
, was
possible
. In
my
opinion
,
Cervantes
sent
this
message
by
presenting
differences
in the
actions
of his
analogical
characters
in
both
stories
;
actions
that
depended
on
historical
circumstances
.
