Notes
The
mouse
frizzy
(fr)
mutation
arose
on a
genetically
mixed
background
and was
first
described
by
G.D
.
Snell
of The
Jackson
Laboratory
in
1951
.
Mice
carrying
this
recessive
mutation
have
curly
vibrissae
which
can
be
observed
as
early
as
one
to
two
days
after
birth
and
persists
throughout
the
lifetime
of the
animal
. The
fr
mutation
is
now
maintained
in an
inbred
mouse
strain
called
FS
. In the
current
work
,
we
used
polymerase-chain-reaction
(PCR)
-scorable
marker
analysis
to
screen
a
(BALB
x
FS)F1
x
FS
backcross
panel
of
373
animals
for
crossovers
between
D7Mit101
and
D7Mit165—a
4.14
Mb
region
known
(from
previous
work)
to
contain
the
fr
locus
. Here
we
report
the
identification
of
nine
mice
recombinant
within
this
interval
on
Chromosome
7
. These
recombinants
have
allowed
the
localization
of
fr
to a
2.69
Mb
region
distal
to
D7Csu5
and
centromeric
of
D7Mit165
,
where
only
74
genes
are
known
to
reside
. This
backcross
panel
may
be
used
to
further
refine
the
location
of
fr
, if
sequence
differences
between
the
FS
and
BALB
strains
can
be
found
in the
critical
region
between
D7Csu5
and
D7Mit165
, and if any of these
sites
have been
separated
from
fr
by the
6
crossovers
we
have
screened
. This
refined
map
for the
mouse
fr
mutation
is
expected
to
facilitate
the
identification
of a
small
number
of
gene
candidates
, and the
eventual
positional
cloning
of this
classic
mouse
mutation
.
