Title

censorship
and the
modern
American

Resource Type

Notes
The
research
for this
thesis
focuses
on the
process
of
literature
censorship
in the
American
high
school
classroom
and
closely
examines
the
role
of
Toni
Morrison's
controversial
novels
Beloved
and The
Bluest
Eye
in the
Language
Arts
curriculum
. In the
past
twenty
years
, these
two
novels
have
found
their
way
to
banned
book
lists
across
the
nation
for
reasons
such
as in
appropriate
language
,
sexual
violence
,
immorality
and
violence
–
thus
single-handedly
corrupting
the
youth
of
America
,
according
to
censors
.
Society
has
become
increasingly
sensitive
towards
these
subjects
,
resulting
in
more
controversies
surrounding
literature
utilized
in the
high
school
classroom
, and
censorship
concerns
have
rose
at an
alarming
rate
. These
controversies
have
cast
a
shadow
over
the
significance
of this
literature
, a
point
that has been
lost
in the
legal
battles
and
removal
of
books
from the
curriculum
and the
classroom
.
Through
this
close
examination
of these
texts
,
evidence
is
referenced
to
prove
the
necessity
of these
controversial
works
in
order
to
achieve
the
overall
message
set
forth
by
Morrison
. In
conclusion
,
I
highlight
the
importance
of
controversial
novels
in the
classroom
and,
through
case
studies
,
reinforce
my
belief
that
high
school
students
should be
allowed
the
opportunity
to
explore
such
valuable
pieces
of
literature
through
the
voices
of
students
.
