Notes
The
purpose
of this
thesis
is
to
examine
the
representation
of the
feminine
in the
first
and
second
parts
of
Cervantes's
novel
The
Ingenious
Hidalgo
Don
Quixote
of
La
Mancha
,
published
respectively
in
1605
and
1615
. The
novel
incorporates
the
historic
context
of
Spanish
society
spanning
the
end
of the
sixteenth
century
into
beginning
of the
seventeenth
century
. The
hero
,
Don
Quixote
,
through
his
loyalty
and the
ideal
of
honor
,
fights
for the
rights
of the
downtrodden
:
peasants
,
common
people
, and
women
.
Cervantes
gave
power
to those
who
did
no
possess
it
in the
Spanish
society
and
presented
them with
ways
to
overcome
their
situations
including
women
who
he
represents
as a
heterogeneous
group
from
distinct
socio-economic
and
ethnic
backgrounds
including
working-class
women
,
duchesses
,
prostitutes
,
pastors
,
villagers
,
damsels
,
servants
,
moriscas
,
among
other
groups
. He
shows
both
submissive
women
and
rebellious
ones
. This
thesis
is
divided
in
three
sections
. The
first
theme
examines
the
depiction
of
women
both
in their
roles
as
dictated
by the
society
of that
time
and as
individuals
who
managed
to
break
with those
social
expectations
.
It
also
analyzes
how
Cervantes
exposed
the
double
oppression
of
women
of
lower
class
status
,
while
showing
that
belonging
to the
privileged
class
did
not
exempt
women
from
being
forced
into
submission
.
Teresa
Panza
, an
illiterate
peasant
,
symbolizes
women
who
, in the
absence
of their
husbands
, had to
function
on their
own
as the
head
of the
family
.
Through
this
character
and
others
,
like
Doa
Rodriguez
,
Cervantes
introduced
a
strong
criticism
of the
inadequate
salaries
of that
time
,
while
through
the
character
of the
Dutchess
he
criticized
the
idleness
and
wasteful
behavior
of the
rich
ignoring
the
economic
crisis
in
which
the
rest
of the
country
lived
. The
second
theme
delineates
the
multiple
examples
in
which
Cervantes
presented
us with an
alternative
practical
morality
for
women
. He
wrote
about
honor
,
based
on the '
morality
' and
sacrifice
of a
woman
. He
included
discourse
about
love
and
matrimony
criticizing
parents
who
arranged
marriages
in
exchange
for
economic
benefit
without
the
consent
of their
daughters
, as
well
as
adultery
and
showed
the
deceit
and
insult
that they
suffered
due
to
promises
of
marriage
.
Through
the
character
of
Camila
,
Cervantes
criticizes
adulterous
men
as
harshly
as he
criticizes
unfaithful
women
. He
denounces
the
practice
of
placing
the
blame
for a
man's
infidelity
on the
woman
as the
instigator
of
evoking
a
man's
passion
just
as
Eve
'
tempted
'
Adam
. The
third
theme
analyzes
how
Cervantes
emphasizes
the
role
of those
female
characters
that
acted
with
freedom
and
control
over
their
own
lives
breaking
with the
established
social
norms
.
Cervantes
differs
markedly
from his
contemporaries
who
, with
few
exceptions
,
represented
women
in
conformity
with the
dominant
patriarchical
ideaology
and
did
not
question
the
status
quo
.
Through
the
incorporation
of
multiple
popular
written
and
oral
traditions
, he
shows
us an
alternative
morality
for
women
by
including
women
who
overcame
the
social
norms
such
as the '
feminist
'
Marcela
who
decides
not to
marry
and
live
free
on her
own
in the
countryside
. He also
touched
on the
delicate
theme
of
religious
discrimination
with the
characters
of
Zoraida
and
Ana
Flix
. In
conclusion
,
Cervantes
calls
for the
radical
change
of these
unyielding
norms
regarding
women
in
search
of an
equitable
model
of
socio-cultural
values
based
on a
new
rhetoric
narrative
by
incorporating
women
of
strong
character
who
are
clever
and
valiant
and in
doing
so
defended
social
justice
for
women
.
