Description
Interview
conducted
by
Eileen
Hurst
.
John
F
.
Croce
enlisted
in the
U.S
.
Marine
Corps
in
1942
while
he was a
sophomore
in
college
. He
went
to
basic
training
at
Parris
Island
(S.C.)
, and then
radio
school
at
Camp
Lejeune
(N.C.)
. He was then
sent
to
Oceanside
(Calif.)
for
infantry
training
and to
receive
his
division
assignment
. In
January
of
1944
he
shipped
out
of
San
Diego
, as
part
of the
4th
Marine
Division
, and
sailed
straight
into
combat
in the
Kwajalein
atoll
and
Roi-Namur
. He
worked
as a
radio
operator
and was
one
of the
first
men
to
land
on the
island
. The
battle
lasted
two
days
and
Croce
was
hit
with a
piece
of
shrapnel
in his
leg
,
which
he
described
as a
very
minor
wound
. His
regiment
then
sailed
to
Maui
(Haw.)
for
additional
training
before
being
sent
into the
battles
at
Saipan
and
Tinian
. The
casualties
sustained
in these
battles
were
higher
than in
Kwajalein
, and
it
took
the
division
longer
to
take
over
the
area
.
After
another
stop
in
Maui
,
Croce
was
reassigned
to a
field
artillery
regiment
and in
February
of
1945
, they were
sent
into the
battle
at
Iwo
Jima
.
Croce
was
wounded
by a
phosphorus
shell
on the
second
day
on the
island
, and was
removed
to be
treated
for
burns
covering
his
legs
and
hands
. He
described
the
battle
as
being
particularly
treacherous
, as he was
only
able
to
move
200
yards
in the
two
days
he was there.
During
the
interview
he also
described
what
daily
life
was
like
and the
type
of
fear
that was
experienced
while
in a
combat
situation
.
Croce
was
discharged
in
October
of
1945
and
returned
to
Connecticut
.
