Tagg
joined
the
service
for a
one
year
enlistment
period
before
the
war
began
in
1941
.
Although
, he
completed
his
service
time
, he was
drafted
by the
U.S
.
Army
in
1943
. He was
sent
to
boot
camp
in
Texas
and then
shipped
out
of
San
Francisco
as
part
of the
86th
Infantry
Division
. The
ship
he was on
stopped
briefly
in
Australia
to
pick
up
more
troops
and then
immediately
went
into
combat
on
New
Guinea
with the
Japanese
.
Tagg
describes
New
Guinea
as
smelling
horrible
because
of the
number
of
Japanese
corpses
that had not been
removed
from
previous
battles
.
Tagg’s
unit
stayed
on
New
Guinea
until
the
Japanese
troops
pulled
out
. He was also
awarded
the
Bronze
star
for
bravery
during
a
battle
on the
island
, in
which
he
saved
a
fellow
soldier
who
had been
shot
, by
risking
his
own
life
.
Tagg
then
went
on to
fight
in the
battles
in
Leyte
and
Luzon
; he was
injured
in
both
battles
, and
received
two
purple
hearts
for the
injuries
. He was in
Luzon
when
the
war
was
declared
over
, and
took
part
in the
capture
of the
Japanese
General
,
Tomoyuki
Yamashita
. He was then
sent
back
to the
United
States
for
discharge
while
the
rest
of his
unit
went
on to
Japan
as
part
of the
occupational
forces
. He was
discharged
at
Ft
.
Devens
, and
returned
home
to
Bridgeport
,
Ct
in
1945
.
