enlisted
in the
U.S
.
Army
Air
Force
in
early
1943
,
while
in his
first
semester
at
college
. He
went
to
basic
training
in
Miami
Beach
,
Fla
.
where
the
barracks
were in a
large
hotel
.
Smith
was
transferred
to
Denver
,
Co
. to
learn
about
the
operation
of
B-24
aircraft
, and
Panama
City
,
Fla
. for
aerial
gunner
training
. He
joined
a
10
man
crew
that
flew
over
to
North
Africa
and
began
flying
missions
over
the
Mediterranean
. On his
15th
mission
the
plane
was
shot
down
by
German
fighters
, and
crash
landed
near
the
Black
Sea
. The
crew
was
taken
in as
POW’s
in
Turkey
,
where
they
stayed
until
the
American
Embassy
found
them a
way
out
.
When
they
arrived
back
in
Italy
, they were
sent
back
to the
United
States
to
complete
their
service
time
there.
Smith
ended
up
doing
a
number
of
other
assignments
in the
U.S
.
including
working
as
firefighter
in
Oregon
and
processing
POW’s
in a
facility
in
Salt
Lake
City
,
Utah
. He was
discharged
in
late
1945
and
returned
to
Maine
to
finish
college
and
work
on his
father’s
farm
before
moving
to
Connecticut
to
take
a
job
at
Pratt
and
Whitney
.
