Description
Interview
conducted
by
Jeanne
Marie
Christie
.
Veronica
Bradley
was
among
one
of the
first
women
to
join
the
U.S
.
Marine
Corps
. She was
inspired
to
join
by a
poster
she
saw
one
day
on her
lunch
break
of a
woman
marine
and
immediately
went
down
the
street
to
enlist
.
Because
camps
for
women
had not been
fully
established
yet
,
Bradley
did
her
basic
training
at
Hunter
College
in the
Bronx
,
where
they
lived
in a
regular
apartment
building
and had
no
uniforms
. The
women
were not
given
uniforms
until
they
arrived
in
Indiana
to
learn
about
aircraft
equipment
, and then they were
given
men’s
fatigues
,
which
were
very
large
on them.
After
training
she was
assigned
to
Santa
Barbara
at the
marine
air
base
where
her
primary
job
assignment
was in
aircraft
parts
and
repair
. The
women
assigned
to this
base
were
supposed
to be
filling
in for
jobs
that the
men
would
usually
do
,
so
that those
men
would be
free
to
serve
overseas
.
While
Bradley
served
she had
many
memorable
experiences
including
being
the
subject
of a
recruitment
poster
and
dating
Lee
Marvin
before
he
became
famous
. She was
discharged
in
New
York
City
and
began
working
at
Bell
Telephone
before
marrying
and
raising
a
family
.
