enlisted
in the
U.S
.
Air
Force
after
dropping
out
of
high
school
on his
17th
birthday
. He
went
to
Sampson
Air
Force
Base
for
basic
training
,
which
consisted
of
mainly
classroom
learning
. He was then
sent
to
Denver
at
Lowry
AFB
for
gunnery
school
,
which
took
place
in
air
on
B-29’s
.
Williams
was
transferred
to
Randolph
AFB
for
combat
training
in
preparation
for the
Korean
War
.
Although
his
unit
was
fully
prepared
to be
sent
to
Korea
, the
commanding
officer
became
ill
, and
instead
the
entire
unit
was
transferred
to
Strategic
Air
Command
in
California
.
While
on
base
he
became
the
mail
clerk
and then
later
the
payroll
clerk
.
After
his
discharge
, he was
offered
a
spot
at
Officer
Candidate
School
, but
declined
in
order
to
work
at
Johnson
Controls
. He
worked
there for
39
years
until
his
retirement
in
1995
.
