enlisted
in the
U.S
.
Marine
Corps
shortly
after
Pearl
Harbor
was
bombed
. He
chose
the
Marines
,
because
they were the
“best”
. He
went
to
basic
training
at
Parris
Island
(S.C.)
and then was
assigned
to the
Amphibian
Tractors
in the
1st
Marine
Division
.
When
shipped
overseas
, the
Marines
landed
on
Guadalcanal
, and
Riccio’s
unit
was
one
of the
first
units
there. He
contracted
malaria
while
fighting
in the
Pacific
, and was
awarded
the
purple
heart
, as he was
shot
on
Pelelieu
.
Riccio
went
on to
fight
in
both
the
Korean
and
Vietnam
War
, and
became
head
of
security
at the
Rome
,
Naples
, and
Munich
consulates
.
