Title	Oral history interview with Nicholas J. Byrne, Jr. recorded 2010 Apr. 14
Description	Interview conducted by Daniela Signorello. Nicholas J. Byrne enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1965. He went to basic training at Parris Island (S.C.), and then infantry training at Camp Lejeune (N.C.). During the interview Byrne explains what the drills were like, and how he made it through. He was sent to Vietnam in early 1966, and became part of battalion that sent out patrols to gather information. Most of the time, Byrne’s position was as point man, the position that was at the front of the squadron. They were regularly engaged in combat, and he was shot at once, but escaped with only a grazing. He also discusses what the daily life when they were not out on patrol consisted of, including what the marines did for entertainment. He returned to the United States in October of 1966, and finished out the rest of his time in Newport (R.I.). Byrne was discharged in 1968.
