Leo
Liberman
enlisted
in the
U.S
.
Army
in
1943
while
he was
enrolled
in
college
for
engineering
. He
joined
in
order
to be
able
to
choose
the
branch
of
service
he would be
part
of. He was
sent
to
Ft
.
Leonard
Wood
(Mo.)
for
basic
training
and
combat
engineer
training
. He then
went
to
Officer
training
at
Pennsylvania
Military
College
, with the
intention
of
becoming
a
2nd
lieutenant
in
9
months
.
However
,
because
of the
approach
of
D-day
, his
overseas
duty
was
expedited
, and he
never
received
his
commission
. He was
sent
to
France
, and
landed
on
Omaha
Beach
,
which
had been
mostly
cleared
by the
time
he
arrived
.
Liberman
, a
combat
engineer
,
worked
with the
Corps
of
Engineers
,
who
laid
groundwork
and
put
up
Bailey
bridges
to
allow
the
infantry
of the
95th
Division
to
move
forward
.
During
the
interview
, he
recounts
the
experience
of
being
trapped
in a
house
with
12
other
soldiers
, in a
small
village
that was
filled
with
German
soldiers
for
over
two
weeks
.
After
escaping
the
village
the
soldiers
found
their
unit
, and were
immediately
put
into the
Battle
of the
Bulge
.
After
the
war
in
Europe
was
declared
over
,
Liberman
worked
as a
translator
and
interviewed
German
POW’s
until
he
received
orders
to
return
to the
U.S
. He was
discharged
in
December
of
1945
and
returned
home
to his
wife
and
family
.
During
the
interview
Liberman
also
addresses
the
instances
of
anti-Semitism
he
encountered
while
in the
military
.
