Title
Oral
history
interview
with
Lawrence
Young
,
Sr
.
recorded
2010
May
15
Description
Interview
conducted
by
Owen
Rogers
.
Lawrence
Young
Sr
. was
drafted
into the
U.S
.
Army
in
September
of
1943
. He
went
to
basic
training
and
engineer
training
at
Indiantown
Gap
,
Pa
.
Because
of his
experience
in the
Civilian
Conservation
Corps
, he was
promoted
more
quickly
than
others
in his
unit
.
Upon
his
arrival
at
basic
training
, he was
made
aware
of how
segregated
the
military
was. For
example
,
Young
explains
that the
soldiers
and
German
P.O.W.s
would
eat
in
shifts
, with the
white
soldiers
eating
first
, then the
P.O.W.s
and
lastly
the
black
soldiers
,
who
were also
responsible
for
cleaning
up
.
After
training
,
Young
was
sent
to
South
Hampton
,
England
where
he was a
winch
and
crane
operator
.
After
the
D-day
invasion
, he was
sent
to
France
and
joined
the
1349th
Engineers
. His
job
with the
engineers
was
similar
to the
job
he had in
England
, but in
addition
they
set
up
pontoon
bridges
for the
infantry
troops
to
cross
.
Young
notes
that
because
of the
segregation
, his
unit
was not
allowed
to
fight
in
combat
, and
although
they had
rifles
, they were
given
no
ammunition
.
After
the
war
ended
in
Europe
,
Young
was
sent
back
to the
U.S
. and
discharged
. He
moved
to
Connecticut
,
which
fulfilled
the
dream
he had of
living
in that
part
of the
country
.
