joined
the
U.S
.
Navy
in
1942
, and
went
to
Coddington
Point
,
RI
for
basic
training
. His
training
was
very
short
, and he was
almost
immediately
assigned
to the
U.S.S
.
Denver
, a
cruiser
commissioned
in
Philadelphia
,
Pa
. The
Denver
sailed
to the
Pacific
,
taking
part
in
11
landings
and
4
battles
,
including
the
Battle
of
Leyte
Gulf
, and the
Battle
of
Okinawa
. His
job
on the
ship
was as
storekeeper
,
which
meant
he was
responsible
for
all
of the
supplies
of
food
, as
well
as
anything
else
that was not
related
to
ammunitions
.
Bergeron
returned
to the
United
States
in the
fall
of
1945
, and was
discharged
in
early
1946
. He
returned
to
Connecticut
,
where
he
began
work
at the
Collins
Company
,
before
becoming
the
First
Selectman
of
Canton
.
