Martire
enlisted
in the
U.S
.
Army
just
after
graduating
high
school
in
1943
. He
went
to
Texas
for
basic
training
and
advanced
infantry
training
. He
joined
the
90th
Infantry
Division
, and
shipped
out
of
New
York
for
Birmingham
,
Enlgand
in
1944
. The
soldiers
immediately
began
training
for the
Normandy
Invasion
, and on
June
6th
, his
division
landed
on
Utah
Beach
.
Martire
describes
what the
conditions
were
like
and how the
soldiers
moved
forward
. From there his
division
moved
town
by
town
across
France
toward
Germany
.
Martire
was
wounded
in
Thionville
,
after
bringing
other
wounded
soldiers
to the
field
hospital
through
sniper
fire
. He was
awarded
his
1st
Bronze
Star
for this
feat
as
well
.
After
treatment
he was
returned
to the
front
where
his
unit
was
fighting
in the
Battle
of the
Bulge
,
which
he
describes
as a
very
cold
,
hard
, and
long
battle
.
After
the
battle
, the
90th
Infantry
Division
continued
to
move
house
to
house
in
small
towns
fighting
hidden
German
soldiers
. He was
awarded
his
2nd
Bronze
Star
for
one
of these
battles
.
When
they
reached
Nabburg
,
Germany
, the
war
was
declared
over
, and they
began
their
duties
as
occupation
forces
. The
soldiers
were also
assigned
to
help
clean
up
Dachau
concentration
camp
.
Martire
explains
what they
found
there, and how
it
haunted
him for
years
to
come
. He was
sent
back
to the
United
States
in the
fall
of
1945
,
after
having
leave
in
Marseilles
,
France
. He
returned
to
Camp
Kilmer
,
NJ
to be
discharged
,
only
to
find
out
that his
mother
had
passed
away
while
he was
overseas
and he had
never
been
notified
. He
returned
to
Connecticut
, and
returned
to
work
. At
38
years
old
, he
decided
to
return
to
school
and
become
licensed
to be an
embalmer
.
