Baffo
enlisted
in the
United
States
Army
Air
Force
in
February
of
1942
. He was
inducted
in
1943
at
Camp
Upton
(NY)
. He
went
through
flight
training
in
various
bases
across
the
United
States
, and was
commissioned
as a
second
lieutenant
for the
490th
Bombardment
Group
. In
May
of
1944
,
Baffo
arrived
in
England
, and was
stationed
out
of a
small
countryside
base
. From that
base
, he
piloted
35
missions
including
those to the
Invasion
of
Normandy
and
Berlin
. On
two
occasions
, his
plane
was
hit
by
flak
,
one
resulting
in an
emergency
landing
in
Brussels
. In
November
of
1944
, he was
sent
back
to the
United
States
,
where
he
worked
as a
flight
instructor
until
his
discharge
in
1945
.
After
his
discharge
, he
worked
for
United
Airlines
for a
short
time
,
before
being
accepted
to
Yale
into the
architectural
program
.
After
graduation
,
Baffo
worked
as an
industrial
architect
for
over
35
years
.
