enlisted
in the
U.S
.
Air
Force
in the
fall
of
1943
.
After
basic
training
, he
went
to
Wheeler
Field
(Miss.)
for
pre-flight
training
, and then
Illinois
for
radio
school
.
After
completion
of
radio
school
,
Slack
then
went
to
Texas
for
gunnery
school
,
where
he
learned
in-air
target
shooting
. The
planes
that were
among
the
aircraft
he
trained
on were the
B-29
, the
P-16
, and the
A-26
. In the
fall
of
1944
, his
crew
was
shipped
to
Tinian
,
where
they were
part
of the
7th
Air
Force
.
Although
the
war
was
declared
over
in
1945
,
Slack
remained
overseas
until
1946
working
as a
radio
operator
in the
Pacific
. In
August
of
46’
he had
earned
enough
points
to
return
to the
U.S
.
After
his
discharge
he
joined
the
USAF
reserves
, in
order
to
earn
extra
money
while
he
completed
college
. In
1951
, he was
called
into
active
duty
again
, this
time
as a
2nd
Lieutenant
, and was
sent
to
Korea
as the
war
began
there. He
worked
out
of
Japan
and
Korea
where
he
monitored
Korean
air
activity
.
Slack
was
relieved
of
active
duty
in
1953
, but
remained
a
member
of the
Air
Force
until
1962
. He
began
a
career
in
insurance
, and
retired
in
1992
as a
vice
president
of an
insurance
company
in
Hartford
,
Ct
.
