Title	Oral history interview with George H. Slack recorded 2009 Sep. 8
Description	Interview conducted by John Ault. George Slack enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in the fall of 1943. After basic training, he went to Wheeler Field (Miss.) for pre-flight training, and then Illinois for radio school. After completion of radio school, Slack then went to Texas for gunnery school, where he learned in-air target shooting. The planes that were among the aircraft he trained on were the B-29, the P-16, and the A-26. In the fall of 1944, his crew was shipped to Tinian, where they were part of the 7th Air Force. Although the war was declared over in 1945, Slack remained overseas until 1946 working as a radio operator in the Pacific. In August of 46’ he had earned enough points to return to the U.S. After his discharge he joined the USAF reserves, in order to earn extra money while he completed college. In 1951, he was called into active duty again, this time as a 2nd Lieutenant, and was sent to Korea as the war began there. He worked out of Japan and Korea where he monitored Korean air activity. Slack was relieved of active duty in 1953, but remained a member of the Air Force until 1962. He began a career in insurance, and retired in 1992 as a vice president of an insurance company in Hartford, Ct.
