Ostheimer
enlisted
in the
U.S
.
Air
Force
in
1947
just
after
graduation
from
high
school
. He
joined
because
he
wanted
to
learn
about
aeronautics
, and
loved
airplanes
.
After
basic
training
in
Texas
, he
became
part
of the
occupation
forces
in
Japan
at
Itazuke
Air
Base
.
When
the
Korean
War
began
, his
unit
was
one
of the
first
to
transition
into
Korea
. His
main
job
was
maintaining
the
electrical
systems
on the
planes
(P51’s
and
F80’s)
, but he was also
part
of the
combat
forces
.
Ostheimer
recounts
some
memorable
experiences
during
the
interview
,
such
as the
integration
of the
Air
Force
, and the
time
in
which
his
jeep
was
shot
.
After
his
assignment
in
Korea
, he was
transferred
back
to the
United
States
,
where
he
took
classes
at
Westover
AFB
.
Ostheimer
was
discharged
in
1954
, and
decided
to
pursue
a
career
in
aeronautics
.
After
obtaining
his
degree
in
Electrical
engineering
, he
worked
at
Hamilton
Standard
on the
control
systems
of
both
commercial
and
military
planes
until
his
retirement
in
1991
.
