Albert
“Buzz”
Holmes
was
drafted
into the
U.S
.
Army
in
1945
just
after
the
Battle
of the
Bulge
had
ended
. He
went
to
Camp
Gordon
,
Ga
. for his
basic
training
and then
traveled
overseas
on a
troop
ship
.
Although
the
bombs
had
already
been
dropped
on
Japan
, the
troops
were not
aware
that the
war
had been
declared
over
until
the
ship
reached
Hawaii
. The
soldiers
continued
on to the
Pacific
theater
and
became
occupation
forces
in
Korea
.
Holmes
worked
assorted
jobs
while
he was
stationed
in
Korea
,
including
as an
MP
and as a
typist
. In
late
1946
, he was
sent
back
to the
United
States
and
discharged
from the
army
.
After
his
discharge
,
Holmes
used
the
GI
Bill
for his
education
,
obtaining
both
a
Bachelors
and
Masters
Degree
in
history
, with
which
he
became
a
high
school
teacher
.
