Lopez
joined
the
U.S
.
Army
while
living
in
Los
Angeles
, Ca. He
didn’t
think
his
prospects
for
college
were
very
good
, and
decided
that a
career
in the
military
was a
good
opportunity
for him. He
went
to
basic
training
in
Fort
Jackson
(S.C.)
which
was a
co-ed
base
.
During
his
service
time
he was
deployed
to
South
Korea
and
Iraq
. In
Iraq
, he was
stationed
in
Tikrit
. He
worked
as a
financial
specialist
, and was in
charge
of
distributing
large
amounts
of
cash
to
soldiers
on
various
bases
.
Traveling
to and from the
bases
was a
dangerous
part
of his
job
.
During
the
interview
Lopez
recounts
the
experience
of
having
an
IED
(improvised
explosive
device)
explode
while
he was in a
truck
. He also
describes
his
daily
life
in
Iraq
,
including
the
food
and
supplies
, the
kind
of
pressure
the
soldiers
were
under
, and what they
did
in their
down
time
.
After
being
discharged
from the
Army
Lopez
moved
to
Hartford
,
Ct
.
where
he
is
working
on his
degree
,
using
the
benefits
from the
G.I
.
