O’Keefe
enlisted
in the
U.S
.
Marine
Corps
in
January
of
2002
. He
went
to
boot
camp
at
Parris
Island
(S.C.)
,
which
he
described
as
hard
and
very
memorable
.
After
graduation
from
boot
camp
, he
worked
as a
recruitment
assistant
in
Connecticut
before
going
through
Marine
Combat
Training
at
Camp
Geiger
(N.C.)
. In
MCT
they
trained
for
overseas
duty
by
living
in
wooden
huts
and
focusing
on
combat
tactics
among
other
things
.
O’Keefe
then
went
to
training
for his
specialty
,
which
was
aviation
ordnance
.
After
specialized
training
in
F-18
ordnance
, he was
deployed
to the
West
Pacific
for
6
months
for
live
ordnance
training
. In
January
of
2005
, his
tour
in
Iraq
began
,
where
he was
stationed
on an
air
base
in
Al
Asad
.
O’Keefe
was
stationed
there
until
August
of
2005
; his
duties
were to
provide
support
and
make
sure
that
air
craft
were
operational
.
Shifts
were
generally
around
14
hours
long
, and they were
given
one
day
off
every
two
weeks
in
order
to
reduce
stress
. He was
discharged
in
December
of
2005
, and
returned
to
Connecticut
,
where
he
joined
the
VFW
and
enrolled
in
college
at
CCSU
(he
also
became
active
in
campus
veterans
organizations)
,
using
the
G.I
.
Bill
.
