was
drafted
into the
U.S
.
Army
Air
Force
in
1943
,
just
after
graduating
from
high
school
. He had
previously
tried
to
enlist
in
both
the
Navy
and
Marines
, but was
told
his
eyesight
was not
good
enough
. He
went
to
Miami
Beach
,
Fl
. for
basic
training
,
which
he
describes
as
vacation-like
. He then
went
to
Parachute
School
in
Illinois
before
joining
his
unit
, the
439th
Troop
Carrier
Command
in
North
Carolina
. He was
stationed
in
England
,
France
, and
Italy
,
where
his
job
was to
maintain
and
fit
parachutes
for the
officers
and
soldiers
in the
unit
.
During
the
interview
he
describes
the
food
,
living
conditions
, and the
daily
life
that he
experienced
overseas
.
Chop
was
discharged
in
1945
and
after
returning
to
Connecticut
,
used
the
G.I
.
Bill
to
attend
college
. He
obtained
a
degree
in
education
and
eventually
became
the
superintendent
of
schools
in
Bridgeport
,
CT
.
