Title	Oral history interview with Walter C. Chop recorded 2010 Mar. 4
Description	Interview conducted by Robert Mastroni. Walter Chop was drafted into the U.S. Army Air Force in 1943, just after graduating from high school. He had previously tried to enlist in both the Navy and Marines, but was told his eyesight was not good enough. He went to Miami Beach, Fl. for basic training, which he describes as vacation-like. He then went to Parachute School in Illinois before joining his unit, the 439th Troop Carrier Command in North Carolina. He was stationed in England, France, and Italy, where his job was to maintain and fit parachutes for the officers and soldiers in the unit. During the interview he describes the food, living conditions, and the daily life that he experienced overseas. Chop was discharged in 1945 and after returning to Connecticut, used the G.I. Bill to attend college. He obtained a degree in education and eventually became the superintendent of schools in Bridgeport, CT.
