.
After
a
brief
time
in
Sampson
,
NY
, for
basic
training
, he was
transferred
to
Rhode
Island
for
Seabee
training
.
After
training
had been
completed
, his
unit
went
to the
island
of
Okinawa
,
where
Chapman
worked
in the
dispersal
department
.
During
the
interview
he
shows
photographs
of his
time
spent
there, as
well
as
some
examples
of
V-mail
that his
family
had
kept
.
Chapman
was
sent
back
to the
United
States
in
1946
, and was
discharged
in
Boston
,
Mass
. He
went
back
to
school
using
the
G.I
.
Bill
, and
began
a
career
in
insurance
claims
. He
joined
the
VFW
and the
American
Legion
, and
remained
an
active
member
.
