George
Laursen
decided
to
enlist
in the
U.S
.
Navy
in
1942
;
however
, he was
deemed
too
thin
by the
navy
and was not
accepted
.
Laursen
decided
to
walk
“across
the
street”
and
try
the
army
,
which
accepted
him
immediately
. He was
sent
to
Atlantic
City
(NJ)
for
basic
training
,
where
the
men
marched
down
the
boardwalk
, and the
barracks
were
actually
the
Ambassador
Hotel
. From there,
Laursen
was
sent
to
Illinois
for
Air
Force
Mechanic
School
,
before
completing
overseas
training
at
Camp
Kilmer
(NJ)
. In
February
of
1943
, his
unit
shipped
over
to
North
Africa
,
where
they
worked
at a
large
air
field
in
Marrakech
alongside
the
French
Foreign
Legion
.
During
the
interview
,
Laursen
describes
the
daily
life
of the
mechanics
on the
air
base
as
well
as
some
of the
more
unusual
events
that
took
place
while
stationed
in
North
Africa
.
After
his
discharge
in
1945
, he
used
the
GI
Bill
to
complete
his
education
,
earning
a
degree
in
Industrial
Engineering
. He
worked
in this
field
until
his
retirement
in
1984
.
