Title	Oral history interview with Joseph Raymond Bedard recorded 2009 Dec. 30
Description	Interview conducted by John Schuller. Joseph Raymond Bedard was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1943. After completing basic training and additional training, he was shipped to England on the S.S. Santa Paula, a converted luxury ship. His unit spent about four months in England preparing for the invasion of France that was imminent. In June, Bedard was part of the D-Day Invasion on Omaha Beach. During the interview he gives a very detailed account of the battle, and what the conditions were like on the beach. After the Normandy invasion, his unit marched across France, Belgium, and eventually parts of Germany. He was on the front lines of the Battle of the Bulge, as it began, but was wounded in three separate areas, just a few days into the battle, and spent the next five weeks in the hospital. Upon his discharge from the hospital, he was placed into a replacement unit, and then transferred to the 26th Infantry Division, which was still fighting the long battle. He was again wounded, and sent to a hospital in Paris. He was sent back to the front lines, and as the war began to wind down in the spring and summer of 1945, his unit began to transition to occupation forces, rather than infantry. By the fall of 1945, Bedard had accrued enough points for discharge, and was sent back to the United States sailing once more on the S.S. Santa Paula. He went to work for the U.S. Postal service almost immediately after his discharge, and worked there until his retirement.
