Samuel
Beamon
enlisted
in the
U.S
.
Marine
Corps
in
1965
just
after
he had
finished
technical
school
for
mechanics
. He
wanted
to
work
with
aircraft
, and
found
his
best
fit
was with the
Marines
. He
went
to
basic
training
at
Parris
Island
and
received
other
specialized
training
at
bases
around
the
country
. By
Dec
. of
1966
he was
sent
overseas
to
Vietnam
and was
assigned
to
HMM
164
,
Marine
Medium
Helicopter
unit
,
which
was
based
outside
of
Danang
, and
later
based
off
of the
U.S.S
.
Princeton
, a
naval
ship
. His
job
was as
crew
chief
on the
helicopter
. The
missions
on the
helicopter
ranged
from
dropping
off
troops
in
combat
zones
to
escorting
military
VIP’s
.
Beamon
describes
in
detail
the
most
memorable
of the
missions
, and the
more
difficult
patrols
that the
crew
encountered
.
After
his
first
tour
was
over
, he
reenlisted
with the
Marines
, and
remained
in
Vietnam
.
When
he
arrived
home
in
1968
, he
noted
the
lack
of any
kind
of
homecoming
. There had
only
been
48
hours
between
the
time
he was
discharged
, and the
time
in
which
he had
last
flown
in
combat
.
Beamon
also
described
aspects
of
daily
life
during
the
interview
,
including
the
food
,
entertainment
, and
Rest
leaves
.
