Patrick
Joseph
Fay
was
drafted
into the
U.S
.
Army
in
1943
. He had been
living
in
Weymouth
,
Mass
.
After
induction
at
Ft
.
Devens
, he was
sent
to
basic
training
, and then
Officer
Candidate
School
. In
August
of
1943
, he was
enrolled
into
college
in
New
York
for
pre-engineering
advanced
training
.
However
, the
program
was
shut
down
in
March
of
1944
, and he was
instead
sent
to
Ft
.
Polk
,
La
. for
infantry
training
. In
June
of
1944
, his
unit
was
shipped
to
England
for
additional
preparation
, and then
sent
to
France
after
D-Day
. On
December
16
,
1944
his
unit
was
awakened
and
told
to
move
out
immediately
,
although
they were not
told
where
they would be
going
.
Fays
unit
was
one
of the
first
units
on the
Northern
edge
of the
Battle
of the
Bulge
. By
Dec
.
22nd
the
snow
began
, and
many
soldiers
were
suffering
from
frozen
feet
in
addition
to the
casualties
from the
battle
itself
.
Fay’s
job
was as
first
scout
. He was
sent
into the
field
to
scope
out
the
area
they were to
move
into
next
.
During
the
interview
he
tells
the
story
of how he
found
and
accepted
the
surrender
of
seven
German
soldiers
during
the
battle
. He was also
wounded
in the
hand
during
the
fight
, and was
sent
to the
hospital
in
Paris
.
After
surgery
, he
rejoined
his
unit
in
Holland
,
just
before
moving
into
Germany
. They
made
their
way
across
Germany
,
occupying
small
villages
along
the
way
. The
war
officially
ended
for them on
May
7
,
1945
.
After
occupying
the
town
of
Westphalia
,
Germany
for
another
month
,
Fay
was then
sent
to
France
to
work
in the
redeployment
camps
,
before
he was
sent
home
in
December
. He was
discharged
in
January
of
1946
, and
returned
to
Northeastern
University
with the
G.I
.
Bill
after
he
returned
home
.
