Audrey
Lyons
grew
up
in
Brooklyn
,
NY
, and
began
working
at the
Brooklyn
Navy
Yard
during
World
War
II
. She
graduated
high
school
in
1941
and
began
attending
Brooklyn
College
in
September
of that
year
. In
December
, the
attack
on
Pearl
Harbor
prompted
a
different
kind
of
lifestyle
for those
living
in
Brooklyn
.
Many
men
joined
the
military
immediately
, and
many
women
began
to
take
over
the
essential
jobs
that those
men
had
held
.
Lyons
went
to
work
at the
Navy
yard
in
late
1942
, as a
parts
inspector
, and
continued
to
take
night
classes
to
finish
her
education
. Her
mother
also
began
working
for the
first
time
in her
life
at this
point
. She
describes
what
it
was
like
to
work
in the
navy
yard
, as
well
as the
lifestyle
that they had in
New
York
at the
time
. She
describes
what
it
was
like
to
volunteer
with the
USO
, as
well
as
enduring
air
raid
drills
,
planting
a
victory
garden
, and the
politics
of the
time
.
After
the
war
ended
, she
married
a
man
that she had
met
in
college
before
the
war
,
who
had
just
returned
home
from
Germany
.
