Joseph
Lickwar
was
drafted
in
1943
. He
wanted
to
join
the
Army
Air
Force
, and
passed
the
necessary
tests
to
do
so
. He
went
to
Greensboro
,
NC
for
basic
training
which
was
primarily
physical
and then was
transferred
to
Biloxi
,
Miss
.
(Keesler
Field)
for
airplane
and
engine
mechanic
school
. There he
learned
how to
work
primarily
on
B-17’s
and
some
B-24’s
.
Lickwar
discusses
the
racism
and
discrimination
that
took
place
in
Biloxi
at the
time
.
After
a
year
, he was
transferred
to
Las
Vegas
,
Nev
. for
advanced
training
. He
describes
the
Las
Vegas
base
as
being
a
completely
different
world
than the
Mississippi
base
. The
soldiers
had
more
free
time
, and
opportunities
to
enjoy
themselves
when
they
weren’t
working
. He was
discharged
in
1946
, and
returned
to
Connecticut
.
Just
one
day
after
arriving
home
, he
received
a
job
offer
because
of the
mechanic
skills
he had
learned
in the
Air
Force
.
