Stewart
was
drafted
into the
U.S
.
Navy
in
1945
,
after
graduating
from the
University
of
Chicago
. He
went
to the
Great
Lakes
Naval
Training
Station
and was
one
of a
select
group
of
African
American
men
set
to be
trained
as
naval
officers
.
After
completing
basic
training
, he was
sent
to
Notre
Dame
to
complete
officer
training
. He was the
only
black
midshipman
trainee
in a
class
of
1300
. He was
commissioned
and
given
overseas
duty
on the
U.S.S
.
Sabine
, a
fleet
oiler
. The
ship
was
stationed
in the
South
Pacific
primarily
.
Stewart’s
assignment
was as
2nd
division
officer
,
although
he was also the
athletic
officer
for the
entire
ship
.
During
the
interview
Stewart
discusses
many
of the
aspects
of
overseas
duty
including
what they
did
for
entertainment
, the
stress
he was
under
, and
some
of the
humorous
events
that
occurred
. He also
details
the
segregation
and
racism
that was
present
not
only
in his
military
career
, but
afterward
in his
education
and
later
career
.
After
his
service
ended
,
Stewart
returned
to
Chicago
, and
obtained
his
PhD
. He
worked
at
Union
Carbide
for
33
years
, and then
retired
on the
East
coast
.
