Thompson
was
working
as a
draftsman
in
New
York
City
when
he was
drafted
into the
U.S
.
Army
. He had a
military
deferment
up
to this
time
, but had
decided
to
let
it
lapse
in
order
to
join
the
military
. He was
sent
to
Fort
Dix
(NJ)
for
basic
training
and
combat
engineering
. At the
end
of his
training
, he was
chosen
to
join
the
2765th
Photomapping
Corps
. He was
transferred
to
Fort
Belvoir
,
Va
. for
mapping
training
, and
while
he was there he was
married
. The
mapping
corps
was then
shipped
to
Europe
in
order
to
make
maps
for the
third
army
in
France
. They were
stationed
at
Camp
Lucky
Strike
for a
time
and then
Darmstadt
,
Germany
.
Thompson
describes
his
experience
as a
good
one
for the
army
.
During
the
interview
he
describes
the
process
that they
used
to
make
the
maps
, in
addition
to the
daily
life
of the
soldiers
in
Paris
.
After
the
war
ended
, the
2765th
was
broken
up
and were
sent
to
various
parts
of
Europe
and the
United
States
.
Thompson
was
discharged
in
1945
.
