Muriel
Thompson
grew
up
in
Palisades
,
New
York
with her
widowed
mother
.
After
high
school
, she
went
to the
University
of
Pennsylvania
. The
bombing
of
Pearl
Harbor
took
place
while
she was at
school
, and she then
decided
to
transfer
to
college
in
Manhattan
. She
married
in
1943
, and her
husband
was
soon
drafted
.
While
he was
overseas
she had
decided
to
move
to
Nyack
,
NY
near
Camp
Shanks
. She had an
infant
daughter
, and
decided
it
was
best
to
go
back
to
work
.
Camp
Shanks
provided
many
opportunities
for
civilian
employment
as
well
.
Camp
Shanks
was a
major
camp
devoted
to
embarkation
,
it
was
known
as
“Last
Stop
USA”
.
It
also
housed
some
German
and
Italian
POW’s
. At the
camp
Thompson
worked
as a
secretary
, and she was in
charge
of
troop
trains
that
dispatched
soldiers
to their
overseas
assignments
.
When
the
war
ended
and her
husband
was
discharged
, she
ended
her
employment
with the
army
.
