Edwin
Lavitt
joined
the
U.S
.
Army
Air
Corps
in
1943
. He
joined
because
of a
sense
of
duty
to his
country
. He
went
to
Nashville
,
Tenn
. for
basic
training
, and then
went
to
Montgomery
,
Ala
. for
pre-flight
training
.
Both
of these
experiences
consisted
of
both
rigorous
schooling
and
physical
training
.
Lavitt
trained
on a
variety
of
planes
, and was
made
an
instructor
for
B-24
pilots
.
After
a
short
stint
as
instructor
, he
received
his
orders
overseas
. He
picked
up
his
crew
in
Nebraska
, and then
shipped
over
to a
base
in
Shipdham
,
England
. He
flew
29
missions
before
the
war
ended
, and was
made
lead
pilot
in his
squadron
.
During
the
interview
Lavitt
tells
many
stories
of what
it
was
like
overseas
, and what
it
was
like
to be the
lead
plane
during
missions
. He also
describes
what the
daily
life
of the
crew
was
like
.
After
the
war
ended
,
Lavitt
returned
to
Connecticut
, and
went
to
law
school
. He had a
small
general
practice
which
he
ran
until
his
retirement
.
