enlisted
in the
U.S
.
Navy
in
May
of
1940
. He
went
to
basic
training
in
Newport
,
R.I
. He
enjoyed
basic
training
, and then
went
on to
Machine
School
to
become
a
machinist
. He was then
assigned
to a
destroyer
escort
that
travelled
to
China
and then
Pearl
Harbor
. In
China
, the
seaman
assisted
in
helping
refugees
leave
the
country
.
Wargo
was
transferred
to the
U.S.S
.
Whitney
on
arrival
in
Pearl
Harbor
. On
December
7
,
1941
,
during
the
bombing
of
Pearl
Harbor
, he was on the
Whitney
which
remained
unharmed
by the
bombs
.
Although
, the
ship
was
able
to
fire
back
at the
Japanese
, the
position
they were in
did
not
allow
them to
hit
many
of the
targets
.
After
the
bombing
,
Wargo
was
assigned
to the
U.S.S
.
Monssen
,
which
travelled
into the
Pacific
with
15
other
ships
in
order
to
complete
an
attack
of
Japan
just
before
the
war
was
officially
started
. On the
U.S.S
.
Monssen
, the
seaman
also
took
part
in the
battles
of
Midway
, the
Coral
Sea
,
Guadalcanal
, and
Santa
Cruz
.
Wargo
was
wounded
four
times
during
battles
in the
Pacific
.
During
one
of these
occasions
he was
sent
to a
hospital
in
New
Zealand
to
recuperate
. From there he
became
part
of the
Navy’s
“Scouts
and
Raiders”
a
group
charged
with the
dismantling
of
sea
and
land
mines
. He was
discharged
from the
Navy
in
January
of
1947
.
