Barry
Fulford
was
eight
years
old
when
England
declared
war
on
Germany
. He
lived
in
London
,
England
at the
time
, and his
neighborhood
was
one
of
many
that was
continuously
attacked
during
the
London
Blitz
. The
first
bombs
were
dropped
in
September
of
1940
, and
continued
until
the
war
was
over
. The
first
part
of the
blitz
included
a
period
of
time
when
Germany
bombed
London
for
57
consecutive
days
.
Fulford
discusses
his
childhood
amid
this
backdrop
and the
effect
that the
war
had on his
family
. He
describes
the
bomb
shelters
, and his
father
,
who
was a
member
of the
Royal
Observer
Corps
, as
well
as the
four
stages
of
bombings
that they
endured
. He also
talks
about
how the
bombings
actually
increased
the
morale
of the
British
people
and his
neighbors
.
