Smith
recorded

Description
Interview
conducted
by
Jeanne
Christie
.
Ethel
Smith
joined
the
U.S
.
Army
Nurse
Corps
in
1944
while
she was
working
at
Orange
Memorial
Hospital
. Her
parents
were
upset
that she had
joined
, but she
felt
that she
wanted
to
explore
the
world
, and
volunteer
to
help
with the
war
effort
. She
went
to
basic
training
in
Atlantic
City
,
NJ
, and was
very
proud
of her
accomplishment
when
she
completed
the
training
. She was then
stationed
at the
hospital
in
Fort
Dix
(NJ)
; she was
made
the
head
nurse
of her
own
ward
where
she
cared
for
patients
that had
just
returned
home
from the
war
. She would
bring
the
patients
that
could
walk
home
to
visit
with her
parents
on the
weekend
, and
ensured
that the
men
could
send
presents
home
to their
families
during
the
holidays
. She
tells
the
story
of
pouring
lavender
water
on a
particularly
difficult
patient
who
then
became
a
close
friend
and
drew
countless
cartoons
of her as
Nurse
Ethel
. She was
sent
for
overseas
duty
on the
island
of
Tinian
in the
Marianas
,
just
before
the
atomic
bomb
was
dropped
in
Japan
. She
describes
Tinian
as
very
beautiful
, and an
experience
that she
truly
enjoyed
. She also
met
her
future
husband
while
she was
stationed
there. She was
transferred
to
Japan
as
part
of the
occupation
forces
after
her
time
on
Tinian
.
After
her
points
had
accrued
, she was
sent
home
in
1946
,
although
she
wanted
to
remain
in the
service
longer
.
When
she
returned
home
, she
began
working
as a
pediatric
nurse
in a
doctor’s
office
. She
kept
in
touch
with
many
of the
friends
she
made
in the
service
, and
still
corresponds
with them
regularly
.
