Ernest
Rettig
was
drafted
into the
U.S
.
Army
in
1942
. He was
sent
to
basic
training
in
Camp
Blanding
,
Fla
. He was
set
to be a
part
of the
U.S
.
Army
Corps
of
Engineers
.
After
his
regular
army
training
, he was
sent
for
additional
engineering
training
, and then was
enrolled
in a
specialist
training
program
. For
specialist
training
he was
sent
to the
Pratt
Institute
in
New
York
City
,
however
,
just
before
completing
his
engineering
schooling
, the
specialist
training
program
was
cancelled
.
Rettig
was then
transferred
to the
523rd
Engineering
Maintenance
Company
,
which
was
sent
to the
Le
Havre
,
France
in
March
of
1945
.
Eventually
the
company
ended
up
in
Paris
,
where
it
was their
assignment
to
retrieve
large
equipment
from
combat
sites
and then
repair
it
.
Rettig
also
did
work
as an
illustrator
for the
company
.
When
the
war
in
Europe
ended
the
523rd
was
sent
to the
Pacific
theatre
,
where
they
stayed
in the
Philippines
.
Rettig
returned
home
in
late
1945
, and was
discharged
from the
army
in
January
1946
.
After
his
discharge
he
used
the
G.I
.
Bill
and
attended
the
Hartford
Art
School
.
