Davidson
joined
the
U.S
.
Navy
while
he was at
boarding
school
in
Massachusetts
. He was
only
16
years
old
and
required
his
parent’s
signature
in
order
to
join
. He
thought
of the
navy
as a
“great
adventure”
, and was
excited
to be
put
on the
U.S.S
.
Long
Island
as a
seaman
2nd
class
.
After
some
time
on this
ship
, he was
sent
to
Trinity
College
in
Hartford
,
Ct
for
Officers
Training
. He then
went
to
pre-Midshipman
school
in
Asbury
Park
,
NJ
and then
New
York
for
Midshipman
School
. He was then
put
on the
U.S.S
.
Columbia
as a
catapult
officer
. The
U.S.S
.
Columbia
received
ten
battle
stars
for her
service
in the
South
Pacific
. As
part
of her
crew
,
Davidson
took
part
in
naval
battles
in
New
Hebrides
,
Guadalcanal
,
Leyte
Gulf
, and then
later
in the
inspection
of the
Isle
of
Truk
.
Davidson
describes
the
devastation
that they
found
on
Truk
during
the
interview
.
After
the
war
, the
U.S.S
.
Columbia
took
part
in
good
will
cruises
to the
Caribbean
and
Casco
Bay
(Me.)
as
well
.
After
his
discharge
,
Davidson
finished
his
degree
at
Trinity
College
on the
G.I
.
Bill
,
obtaining
a
bachelor’s
degree
in
electrical
engineering
.
