John
Juhl
enlisted
in the
U.S
.
Navy
in
1942
because
he
felt
a
deep
obligation
to his
country
. He
went
to
basic
training
at the
training
base
in
Newport
,
R.I
.
After
completion
he
tested
into a
program
where
he
went
to
school
for
machining
,
which
he
attended
until
Dec
. of
1942
. He was then
assigned
to the
U.S.S
.
Delta
, a
repair
ship
, and in
March
of
43’
the
ship
sailed
for
Oran
, in
North
Africa
.
After
working
for
many
months
on
repairs
in
Oran
, the
ship
sailed
to
Bizerte
where
they
encountered
attacks
by
German
forces
.
Although
the
Delta
was a
repair
ship
, they were
able
to
defend
themselves
, and
shot
down
four
planes
. The
ship
then
began
to
assist
in the
landings
of
LST
ship’s
in the
battles
going
on in
Sicily
,
Naples
, and
Anzio
.
Juhl
was
discharged
in
October
of
1945
, and was
married
shortly
after
.
When
he and his
wife
decided
to
buy
a
house
,
Juhl
re-enlisted
in a
reserve
unit
of the
navy
for
extra
income
. He was
called
into
active
duty
shortly
after
enlistment
due
to the
Korean
War
. He was
shipped
to the
Mediterranean
Sea
with the
6th
fleet
.
After
being
stationed
there for
eight
months
, he
received
notice
that he had been
assigned
to the
wrong
ship
and had to
return
to the
U.S
. He was then
transferred
to the
Bureau
of
Ships
,
where
his
job
was to
identify
missing
items
on
board
the
navy’s
ships
.
After
two
years
in
service
he was
discharged
out
of
St
.
Albans
hospital
,
after
battling
a
parasitic
infection
. He then
returned
home
and
worked
for
Bell
Laboratories
until
his
retirement
in
1986
.
Juhl
has
remained
active
in the
VFW
and
veteran’s
affairs
.
