Griffith
was a
conscientious
objector
during
World
War
II
. He
grew
up
a
pacifist
, and was a
member
of the
Unitarian
church
,
where
the
pastor
also had
pacifist
beliefs
.
Griffith
underwent
an
FBI
investigation
and a
trial
in
order
to
determine
the
legitimacy
of his
IV-E
(conscientious
objector)
status
.
When
it
was
confirmed
, he was
sent
to
work
in a
camp
with
other
CO’s
in
Big
Flats
,
NY
. There they
did
work
in
forestry
,
planting
and
maintaining
trees
. He was then
sent
to a
camp
in
Coleville
,
Calif
. a
town
of
26
people
. He was also
sent
to
camps
just
outside
of
Reno
,
Nev
. and
Los
Angeles
,
Calif
.
where
he
did
work
that
ranged
from
map
making
to
office
work
. The
work
was
all
meant
to
support
the
war
in a
non-combative
form
. The
work
week
was
usually
44
hrs
. for
which
they were
paid
$2.50
per
month
, in
order
to
cover
the
cost
of
stamps
.
Griffith
worked
in the
camps
until
the
end
of the
war
, for a
period
of
two
and a
half
years
. He was then
discharged
and
returned
home
.
During
the
interview
Griffith
talks
about
the
reasons
he
became
a
conscientious
objector
, and the
hostility
he
encountered
because
of his
beliefs
.
