Doris
Ross
and a
friend
enlisted
in the
U.S
.
Army
Nurse
Corps
just
after
obtaining
their
nursing
licenses
in
1944
. She
went
to
basic
training
at
Fort
Dix
,
NJ
, and
did
her
army
nursing
training
at the
psychiatric
hospital
,
Mason
General
, on
Long
Island
,
NY
. She then was
assigned
to
work
in
Italy
, but the
war
had
ended
, and the
army
instead
sent
her to
Calcutta
,
India
. There she
worked
at the
234th
General
Hospital
, in a
psychiatric
unit
for
soldiers
.
Ross
discusses
the
jungle
environment
and the
different
types
of
animals
and
reptiles
that the
soldiers
saw
while
they were
living
there. Their
quarters
were
basha
huts
, with
thatched
roofs
.
Ross
also
discusses
the
interactions
with
patients
she had
while
working
in
India
, and the
different
types
of
ailments
they
suffered
from. On her
return
trip
to the
U.S
. she
took
a
cargo
plane
,
which
made
stops
in
Athens
,
Rome
,
Paris
, and the
Azores
among
other
places
.
After
her
return
to the
U.S
. she was
discharged
and
began
working
at the
hospital
in
which
she had her
nursing
training
. She then
married
and
moved
to
Maryland
before
settling
in
Connecticut
,
where
she and her
husband
owned
a
book
store
.
