Title
Oral
history
interview
with
Caleb
Penniman
recorded
on
2009
Jan
.
15
.
Description
Interview
conducted
by
Jim
Lyko
.
Caleb
Penniman
enlisted
in the
U.S
.
Army
Air
Force
just
after
graduating
high
school
in
1943
.
Since
he was
found
to be
color
blind
, he was
unable
to be a
pilot
, but was
accepted
to be
part
of a
B-24
crew
. He
went
to
Aerial
gunner
school
in
Arlington
,
Texas
, and
met
his
crew
in
Los
Angeles
shortly
after
graduating
.
Because
he had
pneumonia
, and was
hospitalized
for
three
weeks
, he
fell
behind
in his
training
and had to be
assigned
a
new
crew
.
Penniman
notes
how
lucky
he
felt
that he was
assigned
a
new
crew
,
because
his
first
assigned
crew
was
shot
down
in
combat
with
no
survivors
. The
crew
flew
out
of
Hamilton
Field
in
San
Francisco
, and
landed
on the
strip
at
Nadzab
in
New
Guinea
. A
normal
day
that the
crew
experienced
when
they had a
mission
(which
were
very
long
,
generally
lasting
up
to
14
hours)
woke
up
early
,
received
one
real
egg
for
breakfast
, and then they were
briefed
on what their
target
for the
mission
was.
Many
times
on the
plane
, they would
listen
to
Tokyo
Rose’s
radio
show
in the
Pacific
.
When
the
crew
was
grounded
, they
often
experienced
air
raids
three
times
a
day
. In
July
of
1945
,
Penniman
had
accrued
enough
combat
points
to be
sent
home
.
After
arriving
on the
West
Coast
, he
took
the
train
back
to
Fort
Dix
, for
terminal
leave
. The
day
he
arrived
at
Fort
Dix
, was the
same
day
that the
second
of the
atomic
bombs
was
dropped
on
Nagasaki
.
Penniman
was
discharged
permanently
after
his
leave
.
