Glenn
Nordin
was
drafted
into the
U.S
.
Army
in
early
1969
. He
went
to
Fort
Dix
for
basic
training
,
which
he
completed
in
1969
. He was then
sent
to
Vietnam
where
he was
assigned
to the
101st
Airborne
Division
. The
squad
he was
assigned
to was in
charge
of
building
and
maintaining
Landing
Zones
throughout
the
jungles
of
Vietnam
. The
LZ’s
purpose
was to
enable
helicopters
to
land
and
take
off
in the
jungle
.
Nordin
describes
the
different
conditions
the
soldiers
had to
deal
with on a
daily
basis
,
including
the
food
,
weather
, and the
numerous
encounters
with the
North
Vietnamese
Army
and the
Vietcong
. In
addition
he
describes
encounters
of
bunker
complexes
and
booby
trapped
areas
. On
May
3rd
of
1970
,
during
an
assault
of a
bunker
complex
,
Nordin’s
left
knee
was
blown
off
by a
hand
grenade
. He
recounts
the
experience
in
detail
, from the
medical
attention
he
received
in the
field
to the
operations
he
underwent
in
Vietnam
,
Japan
, and then the
United
States
.
Ultimately
, he was
sent
back
to the
U.S
.
where
he
stayed
at
St
.
Albans
Naval
hospital
until
December
of
1970
,
undergoing
eight
operations
on his
leg
in that
time
.
Nordin
was then
discharged
from the
army
. He
returned
to
Connecticut
for a
time
,
before
deciding
to
go
to
seminary
school
in
Maine
in
1971
.
Nordin
also
discusses
the
long
term
effects
that his
war
experiences
had on him,
including
how he
dealt
with
Post
Traumatic
Stress
Disorder
.
During
the
late
1980’s
and
early
1990’s
he
joined
a
group
of
other
Vietnam
veterans
who
wanted
to
educate
others
on the
war
. This
group
included
Jeanne
Christie
and
David
Powell
. Their
interviews
can
also be
found
in this
collection
.
