joined
the
U.S
.
Navy
in
1944
, and
attended
his
basic
training
at
Sampson
Naval
Base
in
New
York
State
. He was
shipped
to
North
Africa
near
Algiers
, and then
volunteered
for a
specialized
outfit
, the
7th
Amphibious
Squad
.
It
was their
job
to
drive
Higgins
boats
loaded
with
dynamite
up
to the
beaches
of
ongoing
battles
, in
order
to
keep
the
Army
supplied
with
explosives
.
Much
of this
job
was
very
dangerous
, and at
times
they had to
sail
through
floating
mine
fields
in
order
to
complete
their
missions
.
Graham
took
part
in
missions
to
Bizerte
(Tunisia)
,
Salerno
(Italy)
,
Palermo
(Sicily)
, and
all
over
the
south
of
France
. The
men
in this
squad
became
very
close
, and
Graham
tried
to
maintain
contact
with them
after
the
war
. He
returned
home
to
Connecticut
, and
became
an
active
member
of the
Disabled
American
Veterans
in
Somers
,
Ct
.
