Richard
Andrews
was
drafted
into the
U.S
.
Army
in
1943
,
while
living
in
Newtown
,
Ct
. He
went
to
basic
training
at
Fort
Bragg
(N.C)
, and then
went
into a
specialized
training
program
for
engineering
. He was
switched
between
the
Air
Corps
and
regular
Army
three
times
, and he was
unsure
of
where
he would be
assigned
finally
.
Eventually
he was
assigned
to
Camp
Atterbury
(Ind.)
for
advanced
infantry
training
.
After
training
, he was
shipped
to the
European
Theater
,
where
his
unit
was
used
to
combat
small
pockets
of
resistance
in
France
.
While
working
in
guard
tower
one
night
, he and
one
other
soldier
were
taken
Prisoner
of
War
. He
considered
himself
lucky
, as the
other
four
soldiers
assigned
to
guard
duty
with him were
shot
immediately
.
Andrews
was
sent
to
Stalag
III
, and then
later
Stalag
XII
A. He
describes
his
POW
experiences
,
including
the
severe
treatment
, the
bitter
cold
, the
lack
of
food
, and the
deaths
of
fellow
inmates
. His
most
memorable
experiences
from the
time
were an
incident
when
his
legs
froze
together
, and
another
where
German
soldiers
shot
two
men
, and
left
the
corpses
in the
outhouse
as a
warning
to
other
prisoners
.
Andrews
was
liberated
from the
camp
in
April
of
1945
, by
Russian
troops
. He
notes
that he
lost
42
lbs
. in
just
five
months
. He was then
transferred
to
Camp
Lucky
Strike
,
before
shipping
home
to
New
York
. He
worked
as
assistant
mail
clerk
at
Fort
Meade
(Md.)
,
before
his
discharge
in
November
of
1945
.
