Description
Interview
conducted
by
Heather
Walsh
.
Howard
Whittaker
joined
the
U.S
.
Marines
in
1942
. In
January
of
1943
he
left
for
basic
training
at
Parris
Island
. He
described
the
indoctrination
as a
Marine
as
difficult
. He then
went
to
advanced
training
in
engineering
at
Camp
Lejeune
.
Before
heading
overseas
to the
Pacific
theatre
his
division
spent
some
time
on
Maui
(HI)
. On
June
15
,
1944
, his
division
landed
on
Saipan
. In
one
of his
first
combat
experiences
, he
watched
a
sergeant
, that was
only
three
to
four
feet
from him,
get
hit
by a
shell
. He and a
group
of
three
others
were
separated
from the
main
unit
on
Saipan
, and in
order
to
remain
safe
, he
dug
a
foxhole
. He
described
hearing
the
battle
cries
of the
Japanese
soldiers
in the
middle
of the
night
,
while
he was in that
hole
.
While
on the
island
,
Whittaker
also
ran
out
of
water
, and
drank
from a
civilian
supply
,
it
was from this
incident
that he
contracted
Dengue
fever
and
dysentery
. His
division
landed
on
Tinian
next
, and then
Iwo
Jima
on
February
19th
of
1945
. The
first
thing
he
saw
when
the
marines
landed
was
another
dead
marine
. He
stated
that he
does
not
remember
anything
else
from the
time
of the
battle
until
his
unit
returned
to
Maui
.
Upon
his
return
to the
United
States
,
Whittaker
stayed
in the
officer’s
quarters
at
Camp
Lejeune
,
which
he
described
as
“going
from
hell
to
heaven”
. At this
time
he was to
begin
Officer
Candidate
School
, but
instead
took
his
discharge
after
a
commanding
officer
would not
give
him a
short
period
of
leave
.
