Leon
Sarin
was
drafted
into the
U.S
.
Army
in
1951
, but
because
he was
still
in
college
, he was not
ordered
to
report
to
basic
training
until
1952
.
After
basic
training
at
Camp
Gordon
for
six
weeks
, he was
supposed
to
report
for
training
in the
Signal
corps
, as a
photographer
.
However
, he was
instead
sent
to the
Armed
Forces
Training
school
at
Fort
Slocum
(NY)
located
near
New
Rochelle
. At
first
he was the
Information
Education
Specialist
,
it
was his
duty
to
give
a
speech
telling
the
troops
why
they are
fighting
the
war
, and then
later
on
taught
classes
in
math
,
economics
, and
history
to the
incoming
soldiers
.
During
this
time
, he also had the
ability
to
go
to
New
York
City
, and
ended
up
taking
a
master’s
level
course
at
Columbia
University
.
After
his
discharge
from the
army
he
went
on to
obtain
a
masters
degree
in
history
at
UCONN
, and
married
a
girl
he had
met
at the
USO
.
