Metzger
enlisted
in the
United
States
Navy
in
August
of
1941
, but was not
accepted
because
his
draft
status
was
such
that he was
supposed
to
remain
at his
job
in
manufacturing
in
order
to
support
the
war
effort
. He was
determined
to
join
the
navy
though
, and
eventually
had his
draft
status
changed
so
that he
could
enlist
.
After
his
midshipman
school
, and
submarine
school
,
Metzger
was
made
part
of the
crew
of the
U.S.S
.
Hake
, a
submarine
that was
destined
for the
Pacific
. He
served
on the
Hake
until
Dec
. of
1945
.
During
that
time
the
submarine
underwent
seven
patrols
,
five
of
which
were
successful
. The
ship
was also
present
for the
signing
of the
treaty
that
ended
WWII
in
Tokyo
Harbor
.
Metzger
describes
what
patrols
consisted
of and the
memorable
occasions
when
the
submarine
was
bombed
by
Japanese
planes
and
ships
during
the
interview
.
After
the
war
ended
, he
returned
to
New
York
and
joined
the
naval
reserve
,
which
he was
commander
of
during
the
Korean
War
.
Metzger
resigned
from the
naval
reserve
in
1957
.
