Description
Interview
conducted
by
Jim
Lyko
.
Rudolph
Cusson
joined
the
U.S
.
Navy
after
graduation
from
high
school
in
1941
before
the
U.S
.
entered
World
War
II
. He
went
to
basic
training
in
Newport
,
R.I.
, and then was
sent
to
Jacksonville
,
Fla
. for
aviation
mechanic
school
.
After
his
schooling
he was
assigned
to the
U.S.S
.
Wasp
, an
aircraft
carrier
that
held
over
2,000
men
. They
went
on
several
cruises
in the
Atlantic
, and also
helped
allied
forces
by
escorting
cargo
ships
.
When
the
U.S
.
entered
the
war
, the
Wasp
was
sent
to the
South
Pacific
,
where
it
was
involved
in the
Battle
of
Guadalcanal
, as
well
as
fights
in
New
Guinea
and the
Solomon
Islands
.
While
in the
Pacific
, the
Wasp
was
hit
by
four
torpedoes
.
Cusson
describes
what
it
was
like
as he
abandoned
ship
,
without
a
lifeboat
or
life
vest
, as the
ship
burned
. He and
others
were
rescued
by
another
ship
, and then
sent
back
to the
U.S
. to be
reassigned
.
During
that
time
Cusson
was
unable
to
talk
about
the
ships
sinking
until
it
was
announced
by the
media
. He was then
assigned
to the
U.S.S
.
Prince
Williams
, and then
later
on he was
sent
to
school
in
Chicago
.
After
his
graduation
he was
commissioned
onto the
U.S.S
.
Thetis
Bay
. The
ship
sailed
back
to the
South
Pacific
, but
didn’t
see
any
action
like
they had on the
Wasp
.
After
his
discharge
in
1947
, he
returned
to
Connecticut
and
married
almost
immediately
. He
remained
interested
in
flying
over
the
years
and
owned
12
airplanes
.
