Mary
Doyle
Keefe

age
of
20

grew
up

Arlington
,
VT
,
where
she
worked

. The
Rockwell

lived
just

to
pay
their
phone
bill
.
Having
met
Mary
on a

of
occasions
,
Rockwell
asked
her to
sit
for his
painting

put
together
into the

. She
did
not
see
the

1943
edition
of the
Saturday
Evening
Post
came
out
.
Rockwell
later
apologized
for
making
her
look
“big”
,
although
Mary
insisted
she
didn’t
really
mind
the
ribbing
she
took
for the
painting
.
Rockwell
used
many
of the
residents
of the
town
of
Arlington
for
subjects
in his
paintings
,
including
Mary’s
uncle
,
who
was a
character
in the
four
paintings
of
Rockwell’s
“Freedom”
series
.
During
the
interview
she also
describes
the
typical
day
in
small
town
Vermont
during
the
War
era
. On the
50th
anniversary
of
World
War
II’s
end
,
Mary
was
invited
to
speak
on
Good
Morning
America
and The
Tonight
Show
, in
celebration
of the
women
who
supported
the
war
from the
home
front
.
